About the comparison

What are Similar Homes?

Similar Homes refers to a group of about 100 occupied, nearby homes that are on an ENMAX Energy retail plan that your energy use is compared to.

How did you choose the homes used in the Similar Homes comparisons?

We've chosen homes that are nearby, occupied, and on an ENMAX Energy retail plan.

How can I make my comparison more accurate?

To get the most accurate comparison, you can provide additional information about your home such as square footage, in the 'About My Home' section of the My Energy IQ™ tool.

What if there are good reasons that my household uses more energy than Similar Homes?

Our goal is to provide you with a comparison that is valid and meaningful. Currently, our report comparisons include a group of about 100 nearby, occupied homes.

There are some factors for which we don't account for, such as the number of occupants in the home and hot tubs and swimming pools. To get the most accurate comparison, you can provide additional information in the "About My Home'section of the My Energy IQ™ tool.

I have certain life or housing circumstances, such as the need for energy-intensive medical equipment, that prevent me from reducing my energy use. So how can these reports help me?

My Energy IQ™ provides a wide range of ideas that can address the various needs or situations. In some cases, you may not be able to realize substantial savings, but we've found that most people can realize at least some savings and we hope we can help you do so.

How can Efficient Homes manage to use so much less energy than me?

Efficient Homes may take a variety of steps to reduce their electricity use, including using the thermostat to manage heating and cooling costs, turning off lights and electronics when not in use and always running full loads in the dishwasher, washer and dryer.

About the program

How do you compare my combined electricity and gas use?

We use an energy index, which combines your electricity use (as measured in kWh) and your natural gas use (as measured in GJ) into a single measurement.

What is the purpose of the program?

Most people are eager to make their home more efficient and save money, but they're not always sure how. The My Energy IQ™ program is designed to provide more information about your energy use so you can make informed choices and save money.

Why was I selected to be a part of the program?

You are among a group of ENMAX Energy customers included in the My Energy IQ™ program, which is designed to help you save money and control the way you use electricity.

What is in the Home Energy Report?

Home Energy Reports are designed to provide new information to help you understand your home's energy use and find smart ways to make your home more efficient. Each report provides you with:

  • Information on your home's energy use: For the first time, you'll be able to see your home's energy use in the context of the energy use of Similar Homes that are nearby.
  • Progress tracking: You'll also see how your home's energy use changes over time and across seasons.
  • Ideas on Energy Efficiency: On each report, you can find ways to save energy.

Where can I learn more?

You can also have a look at Natural Resources Canada which is a good, independent resource for additional information on energy savings.

Is my report available via email?

Yes. To receive monthly email reports, sign in to your online ENMAX account , click on the My Energy IQ™ tab, and select your preference under Report Settings on the My Account page.

Can I opt out of this program?

Yes. If you would like to opt out, you can do so in the “My Account" section of the My Energy IQ™ tool or by calling 310-2010.

What does the What Uses Most tool tell me about my energy use?

Once you enter details about your home and appliances, the What Uses Most tool shows how energy (electricity and/or natural gas) is used in your home. While it provides a good estimate of your energy use, it doesn’t necessarily reflect how various appliances and behaviours affect what you pay every month. For example, the What Uses Most tool may show you that you use more natural gas than electricity – however, if you pay more for a unit of electricity, even small reductions (i.e. switching to efficient lighting) can result in greater savings on your monthly bill. Please note: this tool only shows insights into the energy services you are currently receiving from ENMAX Energy (electricity and/or natural gas).

Why do the total charges represented in the My Energy IQ™ program not match what’s on my bill?

The charges you see as part of the My Energy IQ™ program are what you're charged just for your energy consumption, as well as rate and transmission and distribution costs.

However, taxes, administration fees, and other fees (i.e. late payment) which are on your bill, are not included in the My Energy IQ™ program.

What charges are included in my bill comparison?

Energy consumption, and transmission and distribution charges are included in the My Energy IQ™ tool bill comparison.

What are transmission and distribution charges?

Transmission and distribution charges on your bill reflect the costs to deliver electricity to your home or business.

Transmission charges are approved by the Alberta Electric System Operator by Alberta electricity transmission companies including ENMAX Power Corporation, EPCOR, Altalink and Fortis.

Distribution charges are approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission and sent to the company associated with the wires distribution system in your area. In Alberta, distribution companies include ENMAX Power Corporation, ATCO Electric, Fortis Alberta and Epcor.

How have you got my data?

As an ENMAX Energy customer, we have some basic information about you, such as the product/rate you have chosen, your address, and your current and past energy consumption and usage pattern, all of which is collected and handled in accordance with the terms of our Privacy Commitment.

You can provide more information about your home and usage patterns within the My Energy IQ™ tool that will allow for an even deeper analysis. The level of additional information you provide to us is up to you, and will always be handled in accordance with our Privacy Commitment.

I don’t want to share my data, can I opt out?

Yes, if you wish to opt out of the My Energy IQ™ program and no longer share your data, please contact ENMAX Customer Care at 310-2010.

Will you share my data with other ENMAX Energy customers?

Only anonymous, aggregate information on energy use will be available to other homes participating in the My Energy IQ™ program.
